Smritsavant Clipper — Privacy Policy
This page covers the Smritsavant Clipper browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and other Chromium and Gecko browsers. The desktop app has its ownprivacy policy.
The short version
- No data is collected. Not personal information, not usage data, not browsing history, not analytics. There is nothing to collect it with.
- Nothing is transmitted. The extension makes no network requests. It has no server to talk to, because we do not run one for it.
- The page you clip goes to your own computer, handed to the Smritsavant app over a local connection that never leaves the machine.
- No remote code. Every line the extension runs ships inside the package the store reviewed. Nothing is fetched or evaluated at runtime.
What it can access, and when
The extension requests three permissions and no host permissions — it holds no standing access to any website.
- activeTab — reads the tab you clicked the extension's button on, at the moment you click it. It cannot read a page you have not asked it to read, and it cannot read anything in the background.
- scripting — the capture runs inside that page in order to read what is actually on screen, which is the only way to get images that load lazily and articles that a widget draws after the page arrives. Injected on your click; never on page load.
- nativeMessaging — hands what it read to the Smritsavant app on the same computer. This is the permission that keeps your clip local: there is no HTTP request, no upload, and no third party in the path.
What happens to a clip
You choose what to capture, you see it before it is saved, and you can edit the title and the text and pick which canvas it lands on. The app then stores it in your own library alongside your other notes. Images in the page are downloaded and stored with the note so that it still works after the page changes; that download is made by the app, from the original website, on your machine. If you have a local AI model configured, the summary and the image descriptions are produced on your device by that model. Nothing about any of this reaches us.
Video
Videos are kept as cards showing the video's address and its thumbnail. The card is not an embedded player: opening a note does not contact YouTube, Vimeo or anyone else. Only clicking the card does, and it opens in your own browser.
If the app is not running
Nothing is captured. The extension tells you to open Smritsavant and stops there — it does not queue, cache or store the page anywhere in the meantime.
Children
The extension is not directed at children and collects no information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If the extension ever collects or transmits anything, this page will say so before that version ships, and the change will be visible in the extension's permissions at update time — browsers require your consent for any new permission.
